Let's Read: Red Army by Ralph Peter's.

Let's Read Brought to you by, Blayne, because there can only be one.

Who? What?

[From TV Tropes, note avoid going there to avoid spoilers you have been warned]

A 1989 novel by Ralph Peters, often counted among the techno-thriller genre thanks to its subject matter — a Soviet invasion of Western Europe. Unlike other techno-thrillers, however, Peters wrote the entire story from the Soviet point of view, it focuses squarely on the characters, every one of whom is properly fleshed-out and three-dimensional.

While Red Army fails the history test, it more than passes as a human drama, and it details the workings of a modern army far better than any of its rivals, including Red Storm Rising. Forget the romantic image of the brilliant generalhaving a Napoleonic flash of inspiration that wins the pitched battle, deploying modern armies is a matter of march tables and proper mathematical planning. Ironically, war as Peters envisioned it has been carried out since the novel was written… by the U.S. Army on its march to Baghdad.

Why are you doing this?

I saw this book on Tv Tropes when I was looking up “Gunship Rescue” read the description and thought “Woah.” ad the first chapter and its an easy read with a lot of detail and rubs me the right way regarding how the Soviet officers and soldiers are characterized as decent human beings and ignores all that political shit Clancy and Ringo masterbate to.

How will this work?

I will record myself reading the book chapter by chapter which I will upload to Youtube. I'll experiment with adopting Phenny Accents for humor but will knock it off if no ones enjoying it. The Youtube audio will be juxtaposed with Web Review Zero Punctuation style images for humor and maps for context.

I will also for those who don't like the audio but would like to know whats going on will post a chapter summary and review each time and try to provide context.

I intend to update once a week, but possibly more often as my schedule allows.

What's allowed in the thread?

I would like people to be constructive in the process and keep an open mind, don't be a dick and oh yeah, I heartily encourage people to spoiler free as possible to discuss how plausible the scenario is as details emerge. The more spergy the arguments are over the minute details of Soviet and NATO armament the further along the right road I believe we to be.

Note: The book lacks chapter headings, so I'll make them up as I go along.

Chapter I: Soviet March

Chapter one introduces us to our PoV cannon fodderGruntsGlorious Defenders of the Soviet Motherland. Leonid, Seryosha, Korchuk, and Ali.

Leonid is your typical nervous ninny wet-behind-the-ears soldier boy who if he's anything like Waver Velvet from Fate/Zero based on my first impression of him is a weak willed scaredy cat who will harden the fuck up as the bullets start wheezing by under the guidance of the strong, big, stern, fowled mouth unofficial leader of the squad Seryosha.

Seryosha is the as said, is the big strong, stern fowled mouth son of a bitch leader of the squad (unofficially) who just oozes charisma and has a good handle on the men under him. I expect him to be a rough bastard who is nevertheless secretly too kind by half on the inside, beating the foreigneh' squad member aside. My bet is he'll die bravely protecting or otherwise inspirational way for Leonid who will take on his duties for the squad after him, bonus points if he's cursing everything under the son while doing so and being passive aggressive at the end.

Korchuk and Ali, the former is the Political Commissar for the unit and while vaguely introduced didn't show up yet, the cunt. Ali is a central asian soldier who can't speak very good Russian and treated like shit by his enlightened Soviet comrades. Odds are he's takes all of it without a fuss and comes through for Leonid/the squad in the end because they might be White Russian bastards who beat him but they're his White Russian bastards who beat him and fuck NATO, I'm rooting for him as he gives no fucks.

They spend some time playing with their dicks in the mud as they're shuttle bus'ed from one end of Germany to the other, its clear that something serious is going on and the Rousing Speeches About the Need to Give the Required Minimum Sacrifice for the Good of the Motherland and the Internationalist Causes (see the handbook, chapter 4, paragraph 7 on details on how to achieve the scientifically socialist correct means of self sacrificing yourself for the Motherland, doing so unauthorized will result in your corpse being brought before trial and shot.) aren't helping calm the nerves, the bros in the mud would probably like some metal music or vodka but fuck, life is shit and if it aint shit one way its shit another way so nichivo, it cannot be helped.

Man, Harry Turtledove spoiled me with all of his gratuitous russian, I really miss it. All the yobs and the mats and the occassional nichivo though Harry went with more Armenian in his recent series, Anastas is a bro so its alright.

The next scene moves on to General Malinsky's office and his Point of View, that's MAL-IN-SKII not “Malinovsky” and don't you compare the proud name of the Malinsky family name to that shit head. A Malinsky fucking rode a HORSE through PARIS and fucking fought for Mother Russia since fucking Narva so fuck you, what did Malinovsky's family do? I bet he's not even a count. Fuck him.

More seriously this is where the book starts to really shine if your a huge nerdneckbeard like me who likes EVE OnlineSpreadsheets. Because there's a lot of detail for a techno-military thriller... thing... Regarding troop movements, moving them into position, then out of position again, direction of advance and the overall military plan (man, if there's a NATO infiltrator in that room I bet he jizzed his pantsunauthorized release of bodily fluids in the service of the Motherland).

The military plan long term grand strategy gamer that I am actually sounds pretty solid, essentially two very large pincer movements using minor pincer movements in the north and south to weaken the NATO center (who will need to rush reinforcements/counter attack the bridgeheads/contain the breakouts). Using considerable but selectively used amounts of communications jamming and operational feints to make the pincers seem like the REAL THING FOR REALZIES they will unleash the hidden reserves shock armies into a massive attack on the weakened center which is actually going to be the main axis of advance to the Rhine.

Its actually pretty clever and wonder if this was the real plan, its similar enough looking to Operation Bagration that I would actually seriously suspect this is what NATO would anticipate, but then inverted as a trap within a trap as the main advance is signaled. It's something I would do depending on how the game is structured, attack the flanks and make the center look weak, Sun Tzu 101; look strong where you are weak and vice versa. You gonna argue with Sun Tzu? Thought so.

We're introduced to the major commanders expected to carry out the assault, the neckbeard asthmatic chief of staff (and he's Jewish though an athiest, doesn't help him much it seems) General(?) Chibisov The Hypercapable Sidekick who more or less I believe handled all of the details of planning this operation out. Other then suffer agony in being in a smoke filled chimney of a bunker with no ventilation and forced to talk and review the operational stages of the plan he doesn't distinguish himself much.

Then there's Anseev whose the main Tank commander, he's the dude tasked with breakout out past the bridgeheads and improvise like he's never fucking improved before and just go hog wild. Malinky's son is under his command with a Tank corps and actually earned his way, so Anseev did a major faux pais in bringing him up in conversation to try to relieve some of the pressure Malinsky puts on him. OH NO YOU DIDNT. “He is of no special concern of mine, one commander among many.” Owned. Malinsky then verbally beats the shit out of Anseev, obviously in military nerd logistics speak but fuck yes it wasn't awesome. First impressions are bad, I'm getting the “nerdy capable but whiny whimpy” vibes from him, in short he's me. I don't like him.

There's General Dudorov, who hence forth is “Comrade Dude”, so Comrade Dude is the chief of intelligence and is good at his job, but isn't or doesn't do anything interesting yet, he's just The Dude with the funny name.

Comrade Lt. General Starukhin who I hence forth call Comrade Star or Star-kun depending on how I feel is a total bro and sadly unappreciated at that; he like stands up in the meeting man all cool and is like Hey guys HIGH FIVE and no one high fives him [ Sad ], man can't a bro get a high five? He's awesome, he's like where's my fucking air support, why is there no mother fucking airsupport for my goddamn motherfucking army in my goddamn fucking sector and Malinsky has to out bro him man and bitch slap him down down be like if “If you can't do it I'll make THAT GUY you know the guy, do it for you.” And Star-kun sits the fuck down and shuts up because he will eat his own entrails before he lets that cunt Trimonko pull the wool over his eyes because fuck him and his mother.

[I'm actually conflating two different times where Comrade Star stands up, the first time is to complain about the British defences being already set up in front of him and this is where Malinsky says he'll make someone else do it if he won't; the second time is to legitimately express his concerns about the lack of front line army subordinate close air support, Malinsky explains he needs it to crater the NATO airpower in the first day of operations.]

At the end of this chapter we learn some pertinent information; NATO is a bunch of pussies who despite KNOWING full well that WARPACT forces are mobilization into position they're still trying to negotiate something, which means the Warsaw Pact is the attackers in this scenario. It isn't elaborated on what the causes are which I think is for the best, secondly nuclear weapons aren't expected to be used or deployed and curiously all land based cruise missiles and IRBMs were removed from theater.

Audio recording I'll upload tomorrow.

I'm doing a straight up reading of the novel, my commentary in the summary is the only part thats lemony.

Hrrm, first chapter has some noise in the background, I don't think its intolerable, for the next chapter I'll turn off my fan. Figuring out how to best upload to youtube.

Stalin wouldn't, at least not after 1941 failure, and then the development of atomic weapons.

In 1939, it was his plan thou. In fact he was preparing for war for like 20 years.
