Trying to do comics again, and I wanted to do something a little more original then Oots style or Walfas but this turned out to be more time consuming then I figured; I'll start earlier on it next week to figure out something that works better in my mind.

Trying another different style. I kinda want to be able to crank these out with less effort effort than drawing something traditionally but with less limitations then vector* art.

*Walfas were fairly limited in that I could only really do elaborate palette swaps, Oots style gives me more flexibility but I wanted to consider something a little more original.

It really depends on what you're trying to achieve comic-wise, on what artstyle will suit it. Is it another 4koma, or an attempt at trying serious storytelling?

Took way longer than expected, so no comic this week; instead, here's some concept art.

This is Silmarilliael. The Dragon progenitor of House Lazuli.

Pixel Art version, I made an animation due to lack of time to properly do storyboards for a comic.

e: I adjusted the animation, I didn't like it 100% before, now it's better.

Kaos.

The ancient elder Titan of conflict, nothing formless void. Intelligence without intellect, will without aim, aims without goals, rage without hatred, strength and power without ambition. Everything, and yet still nothing.

And some ways ‘chaos’ is perhaps a fitting word to describe the internal politics of the House of Lazuli. The ancient lineage of the marriage between a Dragon and a Magus-Smith that stretched since the golden age of the Roman Empire...

It was now stagnant.

Backbiting, scheming, and plots.

A secrets within secrets, wrapped with lies.

The Lazuli had two sides of the rusted coin, the Magi. Comprised mainly of the women of Lazuli and a few Warlocks and Artificiers of the Men; and the political Lazuli, dominated by the Men. Thus there were always to be two heads, the Matriarch, whose job was to shepherd the Lazuli’s destiny in advancing their knowledge of Magecraft, while the menfolk would direct their ambitions towards protecting them, by acquiring lands, titles, and glory such that none would harm them.

Things however, gradually, with one crisis and opportunity after another, did not turn out as expected.

The Lazuli had once been granted land and dominion over the mines in the Alps, but with the Germanic invasions and the Rise of Christendom the Lazuli decided that the change in fortunes to Constantinople required that they to, must move and change with the times.

In return for rendering essential aid to Constantine in winning the War of the Four Emperors they were granted a Vice-Royalty of Athens. The Lazuli tunneled a great complex beneath of the Parthenon, the Temple to Athena, Goddess of Wisdom in order to both conduct their arcane research and to protect it.

The tax and tariff income from the Athens dominions was great for funding their research but slowly though various concerns would pop up one after another. Whether it be maintaining the realm to insure contentment and prosperity, or upholding their duties to the Emperor.

Things came to a head with the realm of Justinian; where the opportunity arose to acquire Imperial favour. The Lazuli trained and prepared a professional well equipped army of 1,000 soldiers with a complement of Lazuli Magi to fight under General Belisarius in the Italian campaign.

The Lazuli were rewarded with further titles and honours for their participation, however after the death of Empress Theodora, Justinian was convinced to remarry the young ambitious Atheniael Lazuli, a talented Sorceress who possessed a great starving ambition.

With Atheniael driving him to keep working on his grand project on restoring the Roman Empire to its former glory and size, Justinian would eventually further expand and consolidate his gains in Italy and Spain, allowing Justinian to successfully reclaim much of Gaul.

However success begets resentment and envy. The hatred the court held for Theodora, was nothing compared to their hatred and suspicion they held for Atheniael.

They poisoned her, and to stave off death Atheniael embrached Lichdom, transfering her soul into a homunculus, a simulacrum of human life powered by a crystal acting as a battery of mana.

Cheating death made the now elderly Justinian gravely concerned, but in the end he was nevertheless happy that he would not lose yet another partner; and perhaps relieved that she would now live in far excess of his life in order to help watch over and finish his project after his death.

But things were not to be, shortly after Justinian had passed away, no sooner than the end of his funeral that the remaining surviving nobles that had conspired against and poisoner Atheniael revolted and arrested her in a coup.

The Lazuli were paralyzed, do they fully commit to the political realm and intervene on behalf of their most powerful and brilliant scion, or withdraw from the material political world to keep to the shadows?

The choice would have been easier 100 years ago, but such is life.

As the original Caesar had once said.

The die is cast.

The Rebellion against Justinian’s Legacy broke what was left of Rome.

Italia, Southern Gaul, Old Rome itself, North Africa, and Spain were all quickly overrun or broke away from Constantinople.

At the high tide armies besieged Constantinople and sough to drag Atheniael from the throne in chains to be burned at the stake, but she was never found, the Empire ruined; and only a squabbling confederacy of independent Principalities.

But the Lazuli themselves, at large, weathered the storm, and survived. Armies at attempting to siege Athens but the tunnels, magic defences, and fortified features of the Parthenon made it impossible to bring the Lazuli to a decisive fight or capturing and dragging them to be burned at the stake.

When the fighting finally died down, the Lazuli retook control of Athens, their course of political control in the affairs of regular humans had been set.

It wasn’t a bad state of affairs at first, it gave new purpose to the neglected males of our family. So rarely did any have the talent to become Magi or even Warlocks that it seemed like only once a generation did any step forward to fill that role; and even their talent in smithing, crafting, and engineering was beginning to decline. Nothing came from the forges that could match the splendour and magnificence of what already lay unused within the Lazuli vaults, too precious to now be used in battle, though they had been effective in Justinian’s campaigns.

In order to support the ambitions of the male Lazuli, the women of House Lazuli increasing had to turn away from research into the Root, the Akashkic Records that held the entire sum of all human knowledge that ever was or ever will be, and instead turned towards using their talents in aiding the male Lazuli in winning battles; political, military, and economic.

Thus the rot had set in, or rather, the rot had been there from the start.

How long as the sights and ambitions of House Lazuli been at odds? Perhaps a House divided cannot stand to reach the heavens, but can only collapse to its knees.

A new age requires a new paradigm, once more the dice need to be thrown, for otherwise we are lost, a philosophical zombie unaware of its own lack of life. Stumbling forward, falling down forwards along the path of least resistance, each step forward taking us further down into hell with no means to escape, much like how the efforts of a drowning man for air only serves to drag them further deeper under the water, sapping them of strength until the final gasp of air escapes and the life is crushed out from the unfortunate’s lungs.

The men had sought political ambition out of essentially boredom, and we had to help drag them out of fires of their own making, unable to properly guide them since the time of Atheniael, for we were stuck in the worst of both worlds, unable to guide… Nay… Unable to command as is our right, and yet forced to spend our resources? No wonder our House is at a crisis centuries later.

The House founded by our great and honoured ancestors, the Mother Dragon herself, Similariliael, and the great Father Smith and founded of our House, Lazul; shall not ‘end’ in such pitiful spiral into infighting and schemes of an entangled backbiting serpent, but instead shall soar to a new life as a roaring and magnificent Dragon.

And there is one land where the Dragon is all powerful, and as I write this, a new expedition founded on what meager fortune I could gather together, favours cashed for support the assembly of men, arms and ships, and with them, we shall enter that land and take it.

A new land where I, Iriael Lazuli, shall forge a new dynasty, no longer shall the males drive us into disaster, we shall drive the destiny of our house with our own hands, and with the resources of these lands direct it to our most important of tasks, reaching the Root.

Transcripts of the journal of Her Majesty, Iriael Lazuli, first ruling Monarch of the Jinshi in the lands of the Middle Kingdom, excerpts edited by Lapiael Lazuli, History of the Lazuli Expedition to Cathay, a Prelude.
