Historical game becomes somewhat boring after some time, especially when starting conditions are the same and there are know "best practices" for this or that country. To break this, I'm thinking about some sort of randomizer, which would put each country into different starting position then it is in standard scenario. Changes wouldn't have to be too big, just some that'll affect playstyle and make each campaign feature it's own flavor.

These are prerequisites I'd consider for those random changes:
  • do not affect overall balance or change it just marginally
  • do not provide bonuses, rather swing of direction (i.e. each bonus will be offset with some malus)
  • known just to the player and his allies (if he decides to publish them), not to the opponents
  • initial save with such changes would be made by a program so previous point is kept in effect

This is just a brainstorming, so please feel free to post your comments and ideas freely.

    Examples of such perks:

Germany: receives extra carrier practical, loses some armor practical. This would allow German player to think about becoming naval power early on.
Soviet Union: gets extra air practical, loses infantry and armor practical. Soviet player would have an option to make his airforce contestant for air superiority in Europe/East.
Japan: loses some supply techs, gains light air/carrier practical. Japan would have harder time waging large land campaigns, but will have possibility for stronger navy.
    etc.

Sounds very much like what we/you were planning for one of the last Abyss games but we never managed to do. - A sound idea, IMO.
Unfortunately, HoI3's WWII scenarios are still too restrictive in many ways, just like HoI2's WWII scenarios were.

Men de hadde allikevel et gemyttlig smil til den fremmede, en munter vise og en lun historie. For sånn er de, disse Sørlandets barn."

none of the current scens are good for that. The game is historic based. USSR and Germany have to face it off otherwise the game makes no sense..

An Abyss/Armageddon scenario for HoI3 would've been nice.

I don't agree. Even historical scenario can have different swing if startup was changed. Nothing is written in stone.

What should change is how we understand factions. Now we do Axis/Allies. We should play Axis/Allies/Comintern. Winner will be just one of those. They can help each other if they consider it beneficial for their cause (Allies helping SU or vice versa).
