So I had this idea, and couldn't let it go until I'd coded up a game around it. Gentlemen, I present BattleFront, version 0.1. Please download, see if it runs on your computer, and try it out. Obviously this is the utter minimum that can possibly be called a game; I intend to add more mechanics, like terrain, air support, perhaps even AI. For now, though, I'm just asking for feedback: Is there a game here? File Attachment(s):

I guess you could say I blue it. I almost had them! Yeah, after countless thousands of noble communist soldiers dying, the game ended in stalemate due to CTD Also "/>

Agh, CTDs. I hate CTDs. Especially elusive CTDs that I have difficulty reproducing in the debugger. Though if it ran, that's at least something. Perhaps I'll try making a debug version that autosaves every five seconds, and see if that makes it easier to catch bugs. Of course, first I'd need to add the ability to save the game in the first place. Read my blog. Excessive logging.
And I don't mean the timber-kind.

It's a nice idea, but I don't think the mechanics quite work as they are now (ex: just not building anything seemed to be most efficient (just factories seem to poop out more red muck than when I route it via depots), or I'm not getting it).
It did work mechanically, though, which is a plus.

I felt that too, until I built like 50 locomotives on most of my quite extensive rail network.

And I don't mean the timber-kind. Not quite with you there? Quote:just not building anything seemed to be most efficient (just factories seem to poop out more red muck than when I route it via depots Pretty sure this is not the case. It is impossible to win without building anything (I checked this by running it overnight; the armies were still hammering at the same old stalemate line by morning) while it is relatively simple to win with some railroads - if anything, too easy. What I think oddman was referring to happened while I was messing around with railroads and when I started losing on a front I just reverted the nearest factory to normal and then five minutes later it would be back to the old stalemates like It was at the start of the game.
It's hard to lose.
Side note Hilarity ensued when it took a while for it to register me building locomotives out of a factory so I ended up clicking the button around a lot of times or so and suddenly I realized I was fighting two factories against three for several minutes

Ok. It's compiled on Windows 7; I don't have access to a Win8 machine, so it's hard to fix problems for that. Anyone else get it to run on Windows 8? I believe it is basically impossible to lose short of deliberately trying to do so. This a) demonstrates the obvious superiority of progressive Red Pixel Army doctrine over the oppressive and reactionary ideas, if that is the word, practiced by the despicable Blues and b) is because writing AI is really quite difficult. As noted, this is the minimal possible game; perhaps more of a puzzle game than a wargame at the moment. There's some sequence of moves that will win, and the task is to find it as quickly as possible. Hmm... in principle you could just make the AI mirror whatever the player does. It should then be impossible to either win or lose. It would then cease to be a game and become a parable about the existential futility of war, or something. Read my blog. That entire idea resonates through your posts KoM. Eurasia has always been at war with Oceania, at least for as long as Winston Smith could remember.
